Demi Lovato loves a good mirror selfie, and we love a good patterned rug, so when we saw her most recent Instagram snap in her spacious closet, it's safe to say we were hooked.
The singer's wood floors are covered by a fluffy black & white rug, adding softness and texture to the otherwise neutral space in her LA home.
Beloved for adding comfort and warmth to any space, designers, and experts say that colorful or patterned rugs can be an excellent starting point in adding vibrancy to a room.
'A beautiful rug can give you a palette or a sounding board for the rest of the room,' says interior designer Matthew Williamson. You could pick out specific colors from the weave and take them onto the walls, into the soft furnishings, and even up onto the ceiling for a dramatic look. You could also experiment with pattern, pairing a leopard print rug with a striking floral wallpaper or sofa.'
Patterned rugs like Demi's black and white piece work well not just for their visual appeal but also for their expansive properties.
'Similar to how dark walls can transform a small room or a patterned wallpaper can bring interest to otherwise dull space, a patterned rug is an inspired way to make a feature of a smaller room,' says Design Manager at Brintons, Jodie Hatton. 'It can help to add interest and character to the room.'
As far as fabric goes, if warmth is high on the priority list, then Jodie suggests going for the ultimate cozy material: wool.
'Wool is often thought of as creating a warm and cozy environment which is one of its many benefits; a lesser known benefit is wool’s cooling properties; as an insulator, wool can also prevent too much heat from coming through the floor and its moisture wicking properties prevent you from getting too warm,' she says.
It's also a sound-blocker, and the wool's non-sticky fibers make it easy to clean.
