DeMeco Ryans says it ‘sucks’ to lose WR Brandin Cooks, but Texans must move forward

One thing Clutch City sports fans can expect with DeMeco Ryans is a coach who speaks his mind.

The 38-year-old spoke to reporters at the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix and acknowledged that the Houston Texans trading receiver Brandin Cooks to the Dallas Cowboys was a depleting of talent.

“With Brandin, it sucks losing a talented receiver like Brandin, so, we never wanted to lose talented players,” Ryans said. “We’re really trying to acquire as many talented players as possible, so, it’s hard losing him.”

Cooks was the only good thing the Texans had going for them skill position wise during the past three double-digit losing seasons. Despite Houston struggling to win three or more games in a season, Cooks was collecting 1,000-yard seasons — save for 2022 when his production dipped. Nevertheless there was the expectation that with an improved passing game, devotion to running the ball that Cooks would still be an effective leader on offense.

That opportunity belongs to the other NFL team at the northern terminus of Interstate 45.

“I wish Brandin the best in Dallas,” said Ryans. “I know he’ll do well, but we have to move forward. Unfortunately, that’s part of the process, part of our business. You lose players at times.”

While the Texans lost a good player, they did gain a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft along with a sixth-rounder in next year’s draft. The Texans have the most picks in April’s draft with 12, and, going by the Jimmy Johnson trade value chart, have the largest capital of any team.

The possession of that many materials enthuses Ryans.

Said Ryans: “We have 12 picks in the draft. We’re looking to add as many talented guys who are dedicated to helping us build. That’s about it.”
