Dell S2719DGF Review: A Decent 144 Hz Monitor, Great For Gaming

Dell S2719DGF – RTINGS.com

The Dell S2719DGF is a decent 144Hz monitor with great gaming performance. It has the typical Dell design, with a TN panel that delivers a mediocre picture quality. It does not support HDR, and if you sit too close to the screen the sides will look darker due to the poor viewing angles. Its 27-inch size and 1440p resolution can display every little detail and boost your gaming experience. Motion is very smooth, and the monitor feels very responsive due to the 144Hz refresh rate and the very low input lag. Finally, it has some neat extra features that can be handy depending on the games you play, like a Dark Stabilizer that can help bring out the dark details in FPS games.

Pros

+ Excellent low input lag with great gaming features
+ Extremely fast response time

Cons

- Bad dark scene performance
- Image loses accuracy when viewed at an angle

Design

Size: 27″
Resolution: 2560×1440
Refresh Rate: 144Hz
LCD Type: TN

The Dell S2719DGF is a solid monitor with typical Dell design features. It’s dark gray with a slight blue tint and a good build quality. Its base is flat and provides great support to the monitor. Like most Dell monitors, the ergonomics on the S27191DGF are great and allow you to adjust the monitor to fit your working or gaming preferences perfectly. Its back is plain with an opening that houses all input ports. Cable management is serviced through a hole on the stand, and the monitor has thin borders, which is good news if you plan a multi-monitor setup.  Finally, the monitor is of average thickness and will not protrude much if you decide to VESA mount it.

Picture Quality

Dell S2719DGF Color Gamut – RTINGS.com

The Dell S2719DGF has a mediocre picture quality. It has a low native contrast ratio of only 890:1, no support for local dimming, and terrible black uniformity. Thus, blacks in a dark room tend to look more like gray, and this diminishes the picture quality. The horizontal and vertical viewing angles are inadequate, so if you sit up close to the screen the sides look darker, as the image loses accuracy due to the greater viewing angle.

On the positive side, the Dell S2719DGF has good gray uniformity, which is important when displaying large areas of uniform color, like when browsing the web. It has a great SDR peak brightness of 386 cd/m², so you can easily place it in a bright room without any worries. Along the same lines, the monitor has very good reflection handling, great out-of-the-box color accuracy, and great SDR color gamut, as it covers about 95% of the s.RGB color space. You should not notice any image retention, which is good, and our gradient test showed that transitioning from lighter to darker color shades is done very smoothly, meaning you should not see a lot of banding. Unfortunately, there is no HDR support.

Motion

Dell S2719DGF Motion Blur – RTINGS.com

The Dell S2719DGF has excellent motion handling. Pixels change from the one state to another very, very fast, which allows the monitor to display a crisp image with almost no noticeable blur trail behind fast-moving objects. The backlight is flicker-free, which is great news for those who are sensitive even to the slightest flicker. If this is not enough for serious gamers, the monitor can be easily overclocked to 155Hz and supports the FreeSync variable refresh rate technology, which prevents tearing in graphics-demanding games, provided you have a compatible PC graphics card or an Xbox One X/S.

Inputs

Input Lag Distribution

The Dell S2719DGF is very responsive to your actions, thanks to the excellent low input lag. At its native resolution of 2560×1440, the input lag is only 4.3ms, and it stays the same even when displaying a non-native resolution of 1980×1080. The input lag is only slightly higher at 9.1ms when the monitor operates at 60Hz, but this should not be an issue for most. All the inputs are located in the housing compartment on the back of the monitor and are facing downwards so as not to bother you, should you decide to VESA mount it. You will find two HDMI ports (one 2.0 and one 1.4) and one DisplayPort (1.2). There are a total of four USB 3.0 ports, and one upstream USB 3.0 port, so the monitor can work as a USB hub. Finally, there are two 3.5mm analog audio output ports: one for headphones with adjustable volume, and one fixed volume line out port.

Features

The Dell S2719DGF does not have internal speakers or HDR10 support. However, there are some extra gaming overlays that can enhance the gaming experience, which some gamers will find useful. These include a Frame Rate Counter that can show you how much you’re pushing your system to its limits, a Dark Stabilizer which can help bring out the dark details in FPS games, a Timer that can display a stopwatch on the screen to help you time your gaming session, and a Display Alignment feature that is useful if you want a multi-monitor setup and wish to align your monitors.

Who Should Buy It?

Dell S2719DGF Box – RTINGS.com

The Dell S2719DGF is a decent monitor for most uses; however, it is a great monitor for gaming. It is best enjoyed if you are sitting directly in front of it and not in a dark room. Serious gamers will appreciate the fast refresh rate and the very low input lag that make it very responsive, giving them an advantage in their gameplay. Motion is fluid, and if your games have fast-moving content, the image will be crisp without an annoying trailing blur. The monitor will perform decently in an office environment, but the viewing angles might trouble you if you wish to share your work with the person sitting next to you. Those who plan to use it for multimedia consumption or media creation will appreciate the high resolution, but might find the narrow viewing angles limiting.
