NEW DELHI: The toppers of the first session of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main in Delhi have retained their top spot, but nobody from the city has secured 100 percentile this year. Ashmit Nangia and Hemanshu Garg have remained at the top with a score of 99.998 percentile, with National Testing Agency (NTA) declaring the final JEE score on Monday.
In the final tally, 24 students have got 100 percentile, the maximum of them from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana — five each, followed by four from Rajasthan. NTA conducted two sessions of JEE Main in June and July.
Garg also appeared for the second session in July, but as his score was better in the first session, that was considered for the final tally. “The motivation to appear for the second session was just to check my exam temperament. I already had a good score,” said the 18-year-old, a student of Pragati Public School Dwarka who took help of coaching classes from Class XI. He has scored 95% in his Class XII board exams.
His father is an engineer and mother, a doctor. While Garg has decided to follow his father, his elder sister has chosen to be a doctor. “I am still exploring which stream of engineering to join. But I want to study either at IIT Delhi or Bombay,” said Garg, who is now preparing for JEE Advanced.
Nangia, a student of Delhi Public School RK Puram, said, “I want to study computer science engineering either at IIT Bombay or Delhi.” Both his parents have expertise in the field. While his father works in a private automobile company, his mother is a postgraduate teacher of computer science at a private school.
“Thanks to them, I was exposed to computer and coding much early. But personally, too, I have a deep interest in coding and taken up courses from different ed-tech platforms,” said the 17-year-old, who had enrolled into a three-year coaching programme and is also preparing for JEE Advanced now.
Both the toppers said remaining consistent throughout the year was the reason behind their good score. While Nangia scored 100 in physics and maths and 85 in chemistry, Garg did not have a perfect score in any subject.
Among the women toppers, Ananya Rao from Delhi has a score of 99.9921. A scheduled caste candidate from Delhi, Nitin Singh Patel, with a score of 99.977 percentile, is among the category-wise toppers.
