Delhi metro closes 7 stations in view of Citizenship Act protests

On Monday, six metro stations in the national capital were closed for up to four hours.

New Delhi: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has closed entry and exit gates at seven metro stations in northeast Delhi in view of a violent protest against the amended citizenship law in the Seelampur area.

"Entry & exit gates of Johri Enclave and Shiv Vihar are closed. Trains will not be halting at these stations," Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) tweeted.

Both the stations are on Pink Line.

Earlier DMRC closed the entry and exit gates at three metro stations, Welcome, Jaffrabad and Maujpur-Babarpur.

After 15-20 minutes, DMRC tweeted about Seelampur and Gokulpuri metro stations being shut.

"Entry & exit gates of Seelampur and Gokulpuri are closed. Trains will not be halting at these stations," DMRC tweeted.

Angry protesters demanding scrapping of the amended citizenship law clashed with police, pelted stones at them and damaged several buses in Delhi's Seelampur area. Police resorted to baton charges and fired tear gas shells on the protesters who were marching from Seelampur towards Jafrabad.

Clashes erupted between police and protesters at Seelampur Chowk when the security personnel tried to stop them from moving ahead.

On Monday, six metro stations in the national capital were closed for up to four hours in view of protests in the national capital. Normal services resumed across the network around 7 PM, according to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Jamia Millia Islamia, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Udyog Bhawan, Lok Kalyan Marg and Janpath metro stations in central Delhi were barred for over few hours in view of a protest at the India Gate.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act makes it easier for the non-Muslim immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to become citizens of India. In Delhi, people are protesting against the exclusion of Muslims, alleging it to be against the ethos of the Constitution.
