Delhi exit polls: Axis My India, Today’s Chanakya join the chorus to predict BJP comeback

A day after at least seven exit polls predicted that the Bharatiya Janata Party would cross the majority mark in the Delhi assembly with a comfortable margin, three more pollsters gave the saffron party a clear victory on Thursday.

To form a majority in the 70-seat Delhi assembly, a party needs at least 36 seats to form the government. The BJP, the Aam Aadmi Party, and the Congress are the three main contenders. While the AAP is hoping to win the elections for the fourth consecutive time, Congress has remained out of power in Delhi since 2013. The BJP has not emerged triumphant in more than two decades.

However, going by the numbers released by most pollsters, BJP is set to make a comeback in the capital, which recorded a voter turnout of 60.42 percent on Wednesday.

Axis My India, run by psephologist Pradeep Gupta, predicted that the BJP would win between 45 to 55 seats. It predicted the BJP and its allies would secure a 48 percent vote share. The AAP was given 15-25 seats and a vote share of 42 percent. Keeping the Congress at a distant third, Axis My India predicted 0 to 1 seats for the grand old party.

The consumer data intelligence firm also foretold BJP’s win in seven out of 10 seats in the New Delhi district. The rest of the seats are predicted to go to the AAP. AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal is contesting from New Delhi against BJP’s Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma and Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit. According to Axis My India, Kejriwal is the first choice to hold the post of Delhi chief minister followed by BJP’s Parvesh Verma and Manoj Tiwari, even as the pollster has predicted AAP’s ouster.

Meanwhile, Today’s Chanakya gave BJP 45 to 57 seats and predicted the party to secure a vote share between 46 and 52 percent. According to its projections, AAP will win 19 to 25 seats and with a vote share ranging between 38 percent and 44 percent y. Its projections made no specific mention of the Congress but predicted 0 to 3 seats for “others” with a vote share ranging between seven and 13 percent.

The CNX data lab predicted BJP’s win with 49 to 61 seats and a 49.05 percent vote share. Its projections allotted 10 to 19 seats to the AAP and a 41.52 percent vote share. The pollster predicted 5.37 percent vote share for the Congress and gave it 0 to 1 seat.

Even as figures released by the pollsters have become the subject of several debates and discussions, it should be noted that they don’t always get the voting trends right. Results for the Delhi assembly elections will be out on Saturday, February 8, and until then we must hold our breath.
