NEW DELHI: Delhi Police has busted a fake international call centre in southeast Delhi’s Jamia Nagar and arrested eight people. The accused were allegedly posing as PayPal’s tech support and duping US citizens.
DCP (southeast) Esha Pandey said that the police had seized seven laptops, 10 mobile handsets and four central processing units having incriminating data apart from a wifi router and six computer monitors from the spot.
“The cyber police station of southeast district had received a tip-off that a fake call centre was being operated from a building in Okhla Vihar locality in Jamia Nagar after which a team led by DCP (II) Rajeev Kumar Ambasta conducted a raid to nab the suspects,” Pandey added.
The accused were identified as Arjun, Kapil, Talha, Ankit, Santosh, Vanengmawia, Mohammed Nadir and Aarish Baig. They were booked under sections of cheating and impersonation. The cops are now trying to catch their associates.
“During interrogation, the accused disclosed that they were pulling off this scam in order to earn quick money and had cheated dozens of foreigners by posing as representatives of companies like PayPal and Amazon,” DCP Ambasta said.
In lieu of providing tech support, the accused used to ask gullible persons to download a fake anti-virus, which caused problems in their system. They then charged them to fix the problems.
