Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that they were called at 6.03am to reports a heavy good vehicle (HGV) was on fire. Sending three fire engines to the scene, crews arrived around 6.11am.
On arrival, crews found a HGV carrying a number of vans involved in the fire. A spokesperson said: "Merseyside Police closed both sides of the carriageway due to the amount of smoke.
"The fire had been extinguished by 6.40am. One fire engine remains in attendance carrying out damping down operations but is expected to leave the scene shortly.
The incident is in the process of being handed over to Merseyside Police. Motorists are advised to avoid the area."
There is also congestion on the A562 Higher Road as people divert around the closure. Taking to social media to warn motorists, Widnes Fire Station wrote: "Speke Boulevard closed in both directions just after Halewood exit due to a ongoing incident."
