Delayed Lanarkshire electric vehicle charging station set for switch on by end of year

A electric vehicle (EV) charging station in East Kilbride beset with delays is expected to be operational before the end of the year.

The The £160k project hit the buffers after suppliers installed the wrong equipment at the car park in East Mains.

It has seen "significant delays" to getting the charging station up and running - with faulty charging points remaining covered up.

A new substation was approved at Old Mill Road car park in East Mains to allow South Lanarkshire Council to install the six charging points and increase the size of the network across the region.

However, there were also issue with the lease conditions for the land the substation occupies still to be agreed and SLC say Covid also delayed the project, funded by Transport Scotland’s Local Authority Installation Programme.

Now council leader, Councillor Joe Fagan, previously hit out at the delays - with plans for a 99-year lease of a 25 square metre section of the car park to Murphy Power Distribution to allow for the installation and maintenance of the substation agreed in June 2021.

He previously said: "All kinds of work has been disrupted by Covid. That is understandable.

"This has dragged on for long enough. It’s time to get these chargers operating so that more local motorists can make the transition to a greener vehicle.”

SLC previously said that the project has been significantly delayed due to factors "out with its control."

They added that incorrect equipment was installed by the supplier with works to rectify this resulting in further delays due to issues associated with the global supply chain.

But they now have given an expected timescale for the two rapid dual and four fast dual electric vehicle charging units to be brought in to use.

David Booth, executive director of community and enterprise resources at SLC, said: “The main contractor and their power supply companies have indicated that the new electric vehicles charging units at Old Mill Road will be operational by mid to late December.”
