The NBA free agency period opens in less than 24 hours but we didn’t need to wait that long to get our first Woj bomb. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the San Antonio Spurs are trading Dejounte Murray to the Atlanta Hawks for Danillo Gallinari and multiple picks.
The trade comes as a bit of a shocker for the Spurs, being that Murray is still young (25 years old) and was the Spurs’ best player by a pretty wide margin. But for the Hawks, this is a massive swing in the hopes of a) keeping Trae Young happy, and b) having their upcoming seasons more closely resemble their 2020-21 run to the Eastern Conference Finals than a 2021-22 first-round exit.
Oddsmakers are already moving the 2023 lines as a result of the deal. Tipico Sportsbook has shortened Atlanta’s 2022-23 title odds from +7000 to +5000, and from +3000 to +2000 to win the East.

It’s undoubtedly a great move by the Hawks organization to extend the championship-contending window and continue building. San Antonio, meanwhile, will presumably look forward to using the future picks more than it will the 2022-23 campaign.
