Dejan Kulusevski credits Antonio Conte influence for turnaround after Juventus struggles

Dejan Kulusevski believes leaving Juventus was the best decision he could have made.

The 22-year-old has made quite the impact since his switch to Tottenham in January, with Kulusevski helping the north Londoners to the Champions League as he chipped in with five goals and eight assists in 18 matches last season. He has continued where he left off at the back end of the 2021/22 campaign and has directly contributed to four goals so far this term, with Tottenham currently third in the Premier League.

There were some doubts about why Tottenham chose to sign Kulusevski but it is a decision that has paid off both from the club and the player's perspective. He has been a revelation following his month to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the Sweden international has opened up about his move to Spurs.

In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, he said: "Sometimes in football things simply go well. I haven’t changed anything in these months. I always go and always went to the pitch with full commitment. However, at Juventus, something didn’t work regardless of how much I worked.

"I like to look forward rather than backward. Surely, I wasn’t okay at Juventus for many reasons and when you realise things don’t work, it’s hard to change direction in the same environment.

"The decision to leave Italy was the best I could make in that situation. Everything is going better in England. On and off the pitch. Now I always want to play football and win for my team."

Kulusevski joined Juventus as a 19-year-old from Atalanta but was immediately sent on loan to Parma, where he scored 10 goals in 39 Serie A appearances before the Covid-19 pandemic rocked the world. He was then handed his chance to impress at the Old Lady at the start of the 2020/21 season.

With just seven goals in 47 matches, Kulusevski struggled for game time at the beginning of last term and ended up leaving in January to join Spurs on an 18-month loan spell. It is safe to say he has formed a strong bond with manager Antonio Conte as well, and Kulusevski has lifted the lid on his relationship with the Italian.

"At Tottenham, we work much more in the gym and the results are there. My world has changed. I have to say that I've never met a person who is as motivated as Conte in my life. When someone like him talks to you, it enters your heart."
