Defense Secretary Austin Demands Israel's Strategy in Gaza Conflict

Secretary Lloyd Austin is holding talks with Israel's defense minister amid rising pressures.

Under growing international and domestic pressure, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is grappling with significant challenges regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Israel’s military blunder last weekend, which led to the death of three hostages mistakenly presumed to be Hamas members, has added to the tension.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is seeking straightforward insight into Israel's strategic objectives and war efforts. The American perspective could potentially influence Israel's tactical evolution because of its status as Israel's biggest supplier of weapons and security assistance.

The Israeli government acknowledges that the crucial support provided by the U.S. is necessary for its war against Hamas. A sentiment among Israeli officials additionally implies that Washington is effectively controlling the timeline for conflict resolution.

Both countries focused on aligning their approach through a series of discussions at the Pentagon recently. The U.S. is pushing for a change in the Israeli approach in Gaza, aiming for fewer civilian casualties, a reduced intensity of the bombing campaign, and less aggressive ground offensive. Intelligence-driven operations targeting senior Hamas leaders are being recommended as an alternative.

The timeline for this strategic shift is under debate, with the U.S. advocating for a faster transition than Israel appears willing to undertake. This push for change has been exacerbated by the news of rapidly dwindling international support for Israel's large-scale operation in Gaza.

In the midst of these negotiations, the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) has announced the discovery of the largest known Hamas tunnel in Gaza. The tunnel, equipped with electricity, ventilation, and communication systems, stretches two and a half miles long and dives 160 feet underground, wide enough for vehicle passage. The tunnel does not cross into Israel, but its proximity to a key crossing point between Israel and Gaza could potentially mark it for strategic use by Hamas.

The discovery of this extensive tunnel structure will inevitably factor into the ongoing discussions on how to proceed with the conflict resolution, further emphasizing the urgent need for a comprehensive, precise strategy.
