Defender rescues dramatic Liverpool point as Harvey Elliott watches on

Rhys Williams scored an injury-time equaliser to earn Liverpool Under-23s a dramatic 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers played out in dreadful conditions at the Academy in Kirkby.

The young Reds looked to be heading to an undeserved defeat after Tom Clayton put through his own goal on the stroke of half-time.

But in the 93rd minute Williams, back from his loan spell at Swansea City, headed home a cross from Tyler Morton.

It was a sweet moment for the 21-year-old, who made 19 first-team appearances last season to help Jurgen Klopp's senior side secure Champions League qualification.

And it was exactly what Barry Lewtas' side merited after pinning Rovers, featuring the returning Bradley Dack, back for most of the second half.

Liverpool, watched by first-team star Harvey Elliott, had the better chances in a first half that was twice halted temporarily because of heavy downpours.

Jack Bearne and Morton, who has featured eight times for the first team this season, were denied.

But it was after Rovers took the lead in fortuitous fashion that the Reds really started to step it up with Leighton Clarkson and Fidel O'Rourke going close before Williams netted at the death.

The previous day Liverpool's U18s won 2-1 at home to Wolves thanks to Oakley Cannonier's 27th goal of the season and a second-half winner from Lee Jonas.

Next up for the U18s is a derby at away to Everton next Saturday.

The U23s make the longer trip to Arsenal on Friday.
