Defence Minister Richard Marles will travel to the US to meet his American counterpart Pete Hegseth and senior members of the Trump administration.

Mr Marles, who is also the deputy prime minister, will leave for Washington on Thursday for his first face-to-face meeting with Mr Hegseth since he was sworn in as US defence secretary in January.

The alliance between the two nations will be high on the agenda as Mr Marles seeks assurances the AUKUS partnership remains on course.

Mr Marles spoke with Mr Hegseth by phone last week in a call he described as "warm".

He told Sky News on Wednesday he aimed to get to know his US counterpart in what would be a "very important meeting" and to talk about the defence relationship, with AUKUS front and centre.

Mr Marles and Mr Hegseth will visit the Arlington National Cemetery in Washington to lay a wreath in honour of American service members and their families.

"I look forward to reaffirming Australia's commitment to the alliance, governed by our shared interests for a secure, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific," Mr Marles said.

"Our government will work closely with the Trump administration to realise the benefits of our strong economic and security partnership for our nations and the region."

The Albanese government is working hard behind the scenes to convince US President Donald Trump not to slap tariffs on the nation's exports, due to the trade surplus the US has with Australia.

Mr Trump has postponed sweeping new duties on goods from Canada and Mexico but will impose 10 per cent tariffs on Chinese exports to the US.
