Deep South eyes Thai-Saudi thaw

A forum to gather public input on opportunities for deep South provinces in expectation of improved relations between Thailand and Saudi Arabia will be held in the middle of next month, the deputy government spokeswoman said.

Rachada Dhnadirek said on Sunday the forum will be held by the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre (SBPAC) although a venue has yet to be confirmed.

She said Rear Adm Somkiat Pholprayoon, SBPAC secretary-general, had reported the plan to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, noting the forum will comprise about 500 participants.

Those invited will include religious leaders, local and state officials, and labourers who have worked in Saudi Arabia.

Ms Rachada said the forum would gather public input on the development of the deep South region in light of this new chapter in Thai-Saudi Arabian relations. She said the improved relations, coming more than three decades after Saudi Arabia downgraded diplomatic ties with Thailand, will lead to a wide range of cooperation in terms of economics, the environment, education, security and tourism.
