Deep Rock Galactic officially has more words than Tolkien’s The Hobbit

Deep Rock Galactic, the dwarf mining multiplayer game from Ghost Ship Games, saw sales soar in 2022 and more than tripled its player base compared to 2021. The developers and Deep Rock publisher Coffee Stain announced the achievements in a new data roundup that included other stats, including how many words are in the game.

With the addition of Deep Rock Galactic season 3, that word count reached just over 110,000, and as Ghost Ship Games noted, that’s about 15,000 more words than The Hobbit. That novel’s worth of words is spread out across player dialogue, tutorial text, and item and gear descriptions, among other things.

Elsewhere in the stats, Ghost Ship said Deep Rock players died 20 million times on account of friendly fire, and players didn’t make it there and back again over 50 million times thanks to death by falling – so maybe watch your step and watch your friends the next time you’re on a mission.

The game sold 2.3 million units in 2022, bringing the space game’s total units sold up to 5.5 million since it launched in 2018. More than 9 million people downloaded it on PS Plus in 2022, and there were 827,000 active monthly users in 2022, up from just over 500,000 in 2021.

That number is likely to keep growing. GamesRadar recently reported that Deep Rock Galactic is making the rounds among some popular VTubers, where existing players are welcoming new fans – fans often interested primarily in JRPGs, Japanese pop, and related media – to the game. Three VTubers made the list of YouTube’s 10 most popular streamers in 2022, so if the trend continues, Deep Rock may see a 2023 that’s even better than 2022.
