Declan Rice's honest St James' Park assessment after standout performance against Newcastle United

West Ham star Declan Rice shared his 'pride' after the Hammers took a well-earned point away from St James' Park. The England international was the standout performer from the 1-1 draw, with Newcastle United unable to restrain him throughout the evening.

Rice was instrumental in his side's comeback after going a goal down inside the opening three minutes on Tyneside. Speaking after the game, the midfielder admitted he was delighted with the result given how tricky games away at Newcastle can be.

“It’s massive,” he said. “As a group of lads, we know how important these games are. We need to be picking up points in every game. Today was vintage West Ham.

"We dug in, ran our socks off and had chances. You’re not always going to dominate the ball after the way Newcastle have played this season but we slowed the game down as much as we could and it’s a good point for us at a tough place to come."

Another fine performance came from central defender Nayef Aguerd, who won everything in the air and stopped Callum Wilson scoring a second with a late tackle in front of the Leazes End. Aguerd was another who knew the task at hand before facing the Magpies.

“Before the game we knew Newcastle at home are very tough to play,” he said. “I’m very proud of the lads. It’s a massive point.

"When they scored the first goal we were very upset. We said at half-time, if we can’t win we can take one point. The reaction from the lads was fantastic.

“[The tackle on Wilson] was a little bit risky but I’m here to defend and help the team. If I don’t tackle him I think he scores."
