Declan Rice addresses West Ham fans after losing on first Arsenal return

Declan Rice wrote an emotional message to West Ham fans after returning to the club for the first time since his move to Arsenal.

The England midfielder played just over half an hour as the Gunners were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by his former side, who ran out 3-1 winners on a rainy night at the London Stadium.

Rice was booed in some sections after appearing in front of Hammers fans for the first time since signing off his career at the club by winning the Europa Conference League in Prague.

David Moyes had urged Irons supporters to greet their former captain with a warm welcome in the build-up to the game, such was his strong connection to them during his time playing for the club.

After being booed, albeit perhaps in a slightly tongue-in-cheek fashion, Rice responded with a lengthy message on his Instagram story.

"Despite the result, loved being back at the stadium & seeing so many familiar faces,” he wrote.

"Thank you West Ham fans for the reception. Will be forever grateful to all of you.

"Wish you all nothing but the best for the rest of the season. See you soon!"
