Decision on Grenfell Tower demolition to be made within weeks

A decision on the demolition of Grenfell Tower will be made within weeks.

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner will reveal the future of the building in February, the government confirmed on Monday.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government said that there would be “no immediate changes” to the site if the minister rules the block should be pulled down.

In an update addressed to the Grenfell Tower community, the department said: “The Deputy Prime Minister has recently shared with you that she plans to continue the conversation about the tower to understand your views and come to a decision in February 2025.

"She has made a firm commitment that you will continue to be at the heart of this process.

"As part of this, she wishes to set out a clear path ahead to bring transparency to the decision-making. She wants to ensure your voices are heard and that you have information about the approach to the decision before it is made.

"She knows there are a range of views involved. She has committed to listen, to respect the different views shared, and for these conversations to inform her approach."

Fire ripped through the 24-storey North Kensington tower block in June 2017, killing 72 people and sparking a national scandal over building safety and material standards.

Protective white wrapping was installed over the building’s shell to protect it two months after the blaze and has been there ever since.

Three years ago Ms Rayner’s Tory predecessor Michael Gove shelved plans to demolish the block following outcry from survivors and bereaved families.

An international competition to design a memorial for victims of the tragedy was launched last July, with a winner due to be announced this spring.

Almost 3,000sq metres of space has been set aside for the memorial, which includes the ground on which the tower block stands.

A 2022 report by the Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission included suggestions from members of the community on what the memorial could look like.

They included keeping the building as a “vertical garden” with a high level platform and hanging plants.
