Deborah James joked it was 'typical' best pal Rachael Bland died on day of cancer treatment

Deborah James joked it was 'typical' of her best pal and fellow cancer sufferer Rachael Bland to die on the day she had her treatment booked in, back in 2018.

The 40-year-old made the revelation on their BBC Sounds podcast - Me, You & The Big C - in the first episode that aired after Rachael died.

She tragically passed in September 2018 after a devastating battle with breast cancer. Rachael left behind her widow Steve and son Freddie.

The two fronted the podcast alongside Lauren Mahon, but Rachael was later replaced by Steve following her tragic death.

Deborah, who has been living with stage 4 bowel cancer since 2016, revealed on Monday she doesn't know how long she has left.

Speaking on the podcast episode which aired back in 2018, Deborah discussed how she was due to have Cyberknife treatment - which is really targeted radiotherapy - but Rachael died on the day it was scheduled in for.

She says she was "lucky" to have been selected for the treatment as there's only a limited amount of machines in country.

Deborah revealed she told Rachael that she was booked in for the treatment before her sudden death.

She said she had the equivalent of 37 days of radiotherapy in just three days so that she was able to attend Rachael's funeral.

The broadcaster revealed they brought forward some of her treatments so she could make it to Rachael's funeral, as it was looking doubtful.

"Emotionally, it was quite hard as I was going through it as we were broadcasting about Rachael's death," Deborah said.

She continued: "It was looking really doubtful because it had been scheduled in for ages."

"And typical Rach had to go and die on the day it was scheduled in. Seriously, Rach!" she joked.

In a heartbreaking Instagram post yesterday, Deborah admitted that 'nobody knew how long she had left'.

The mum-of-two penned: "The message I never wanted to write. We have tried everything, but my body simply isn’t playing ball.

"My active care has stopped and I am now moved to hospice at home care, with my incredible family all around me and the focus is on making sure I’m not in pain and spending time with them.

"Nobody knows how long I’ve got left but I’m not unable to walk, I’m sleeping most of the days, and most things I took for granted are pipe dreams. I know we have left no stone unturned.

"But even with all the innovative cancer drugs in the world or some magic new breakthrough, my body just can’t continue anymore."

Thoughts and prayers have been sent to Deborah on social media.
