'Death-trap' Nottinghamshire road resurfaced after action demanded

A "death-trap" road in Nottinghamshire has been resurfaced after local councillors demanded the deteriorating road be resurfaced. Resurfacing works have been completed by Nottinghamshire County Council on two large parts of Mill Lane, Kirkby in Ashfield.

After receiving numerous complaints from residents and motorists, councillors in the area demanded action over the "dangerous" state of the road, which they feared had deteriorated to the point it was no longer safe to use.

Councillor Jason Zadrozny, Leader of Ashfield District Council and Kirkby councillor, previously referred to it as a "s death trap road" and visited Mill Lane this week to see the roads being carried out after stating they needed to be fixed as "an absolute priority." He said: "Whilst these works will be a source of great relief for drivers – it shouldn’t take bad publicity and uproar from residents and councillors for the County Council to act.

"We are pleased however that after our intervention – the road has made safer. The County Council need to put in a long term plan to deal with the drainage issues and complete their work to make this road safer.

"This is just one of dozens of areas we continue to highlight in our fight to fix our broken roads and pavements.”

Councillor Rachel Madden, who represents Annesley and Kirkby Woodhouse on Ashfield District Council, had also been fighting for the road to be resurfaced.

She said: "I am pleased that after we raised the obvious dangers on this rural road, the County Council have taken action. I have been a councillor for 24 years.

"I have never known a road to deteriorate to such an extent that we had to demand it was closed. Whilst these two parts of the road were the most urgent – the whole road needs fixing, especially at the margins of the grass and tarmac which remain dangerous.”

The councillors have also urgently requested a non-slip surface for the whole road.
