Death of man in Townsville Correctional Centre under investigation

Authorities say a "full internal investigation" is underway into the death of a man at the Townsville Correctional Centre.

Sagee Paul Mabo, 57, was found unresponsive in his cell by officers about 7:00am on Wednesday.

Mabo was awaiting trial in the District Court on child sexual abuse charges but had yet to enter a plea.

A spokesperson for Queensland Corrective Services said a report would be prepared for the coroner.

"Queensland Corrective Services immediately commenced CPR," they said.

"Queensland Ambulance Service attended, however the man was unable to be revived."

The death in custody has triggered an internal investigation, which Queensland Corrective Services said was the "normal process".

"A full internal investigation will be conducted and Queensland Corrective Services will assist police in preparing a report for the coroner," the spokesperson said.

Mabo was due to be arraigned in the District Court in February on both recent and historical child sex offences.

He was charged with 31 counts of indecent treatment of children under 16, two counts of maintaining an unlawful relationship with a child, seven counts of rape, three counts of attempted rape, and one count of possessing child exploitation material.

The offences were alleged to have been committed between 1999 and 2019.
