Dean Smith has opened up on the incident that led to Manchester United loanee Brandon Williams taking down an Instagram post after Norwich City's 4-0 defeat against West Ham United.
The 21-year-old reacted on social media after what he claimed was abuse from some supporters on his exit from Carrow Road. He added that fans followed him home following the game against the Hammers.
Despite what occurred on the weekend, Smith has confirmed Williams will remain at the Canaries until the end of the season and is available for selection ahead of their trip to Leicester City. But the Norwich boss hasn't spoken to Williams about the incident.
"He has posted that in an emotional moment. What we can’t do is condone anybody following players," said Smith. "We can’t condone what he did as well, but he did the right thing and took it down and gave his reasons for it.
"When I first saw it I didn't have a clue what it meant. I am not a social media person so I had no idea of the context. But the people at the football club contacted Brandon straight away to see what it was about, what he was doing. Then he realised the responsibilities he has and took it down very quickly.
"He has issued a reason why he did that. As far as I am concerned and the club is concerned that is the end of it. I have not spoken to him about. I don’t think I need to. There are people at the football club who deal with that and have dealt with that.
Should Brandon Williams be in Manchester United's first-choice starting XI next season? Let us know in the comments below!
"He goes back to Manchester United and he is a Manchester United player. He is on loan until the end of the season, like Billy Gilmour and Ozan Kabak and they will go back."
"He trained really well on Monday. He will train today and we will assess him."
Since joining on loan for the season from United last summer, Williams has made 26 Premier League appearances, grabbing one assist. He has made the left-back position his own ahead of Dimitri Giannoulis.
With the Red Devils struggling for consistency at the break, it remains to be seen whether Williams will get an opportunity under incoming Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag. Luke Shaw and Alex Telles have both failed to fulfil their potential this season, potentially leaving the door open for Williams to make the position his own.
