Dean Henderson joins Nottingham Forest on loan as Manchester United strike wage agreement

Nottingham Forest will cover Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson's £110,000 weekly wages during his season-long loan.

Forest do not have an option to buy Henderson, 25, and he will not be able to play against United in the Premier League. United midfielder James Garner enjoyed a successful loan with newly-promoted Forest last season.

United have confirmed the departure of Henderson after he played only three games last season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

Newcastle were interested in Henderson and the England international held such encouraging talks with the club in May he hoped to secure a move to St James' Park. Henderson was then dropped from the United squad for their final game of the season at Crystal Palace.

Newcastle instead signed an identical profile of 'keeper to Henderson in his England teammate Nick Pope. Burnley had not been relegated at the time Newcastle held initial discussions with Henderson and their Championship status made Pope's £10million deal straightforward.

United were also unconvinced by the option of accepting Karl Darlow in a loan exchange involving Henderson. Newcastle had offered Martin Dubravka to United in a mooted loan swap involving Henderson in January but Dubravka rejected the proposal.

Henderson is contracted to United until 2025, with the option of an additional year, which has made a permanent move prohibitive. Forest is the sixth loan move of his career.

New United manager Erik ten Hag was keen to loan in Henderson in January when he was Ajax manager but David de Gea was always expected to start next season for United as Henderson has agitated to leave for several months.

Solskjaer intended on starting last season with Henderson as the United No.1 but he contracted Covid-19 in his first week of pre-season training and was laid low for a month. By the time Henderson returned in late September, De Gea had already enjoyed a stellar start to the season.
