Dealz plans to launch online in Ireland after buying pound shop website

Dealz has acquired online discount retail business Poundshop.com - and now plans to roll out an an online service in Ireland.

The popular discount store, which can be found in 66 locations across Ireland, acquired Poundshop.com for an undisclosed sum.

This will now provide the business with the infrastructure ecommerce operations, RTE reports.

Poundland & Dealz managing director Barry Williams said: "It-'s great to warmly welcome the Poundshop.com team to Dealz.

"This acquisition puts power and pace behind our aspirations to make our amazing products and value available to customers across the UK and Ireland, however they choose to shop."

Pouindland.com was founded in 2014 and currently has almost 400,000 customers across the UK. It employs around 65 workers at its distribution centre in Wednesbury, West Midlands.

Poundland & Dealz bosses announced today that the next steps following the acquisition include widening the businesses offering by adding PEP&CO clothing and homewares, as well as the Dealz online service in Ireland.

Poundland expanded into Ireland in 2011 as Dealz. The first two stores were opened in Blanchardstown and Portlaoise.

It was originally founded in 1990, primarily as a £1 store selling clearance items. It now operates nearly 900 stores across the UK and Ireland.
