On Wednesday, a series of devastating tornadoes tore through St. Lucie County, Florida, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. According to the National Weather Service, at least nine tornadoes touched down in the county, with three occurring in less than 25 minutes.
The violent storms claimed the lives of at least four individuals, and hundreds of homes were completely destroyed, as confirmed by county officials. The first tornado struck just before 12:30 p.m. local time, triggering a series of over 20 tornado warnings throughout the day.
Of the warnings issued, nine were for observed tornadoes, indicating that there was visual evidence of tornado activity. The most intense period occurred between 4:44 p.m. and 5:10 p.m. ET when three tornadoes hit the area in rapid succession. It remains unclear whether these tornadoes were moving simultaneously.
The situation escalated further around 5:30 p.m. ET when a tornado warning was classified as a 'particularly dangerous situation' by the weather service. Residents were alerted to a 'large and extremely dangerous tornado' near the St. Lucie Airport.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of the disaster, the full extent of the tornadoes' impact is yet to be determined. The National Weather Service will dispatch storm damage survey teams to assess the affected areas and provide a comprehensive report on the confirmed tornado count and their intensity.
