A tragic landslide caused by heavy rains has resulted in the loss of six lives near Mexico City, as reported by authorities. The incident occurred on Monday night in Naucalpan, a community located northwest of Mexico City. The State of Mexico government confirmed that the landslide also impacted a house and a school in the area. The victims of this unfortunate event included four men and two women, while three other individuals sustained injuries and were promptly taken to a state hospital for medical attention.
In response to the emergency, State Gov. Delfina Gómez swiftly mobilized rescue teams and security task forces to provide assistance to the affected families in Naucalpan. This tragic event follows closely on the heels of another devastating landslide that claimed the lives of nine individuals on Saturday in Jilotzingo, situated to the west of Mexico City in the State of Mexico. Among the victims of this earlier incident was a 3-month-old baby, while two children aged 10 and 12, along with a 34-year-old woman, were successfully rescued. The landslide in Jilotzingo also resulted in the displacement of several households, leading authorities to evacuate over 100 individuals due to the risk of further landslides.
The State of Mexico has been experiencing a series of landslides and heavy rainfall since the onset of the rainy season in late July. In areas like Chalco, which have been particularly hard hit by torrential downpours, the combination of rapid urban expansion and deteriorating infrastructure has led to the inundation of streets, residences, and commercial establishments by sewage-contaminated waters.
