Tragedy struck eastern Uganda as at least 13 individuals lost their lives due to landslides that buried 40 homes across six villages. The Uganda Red Cross Society confirmed the recovery of 13 bodies, with rescue operations still ongoing. Local authorities fear the death toll could potentially rise to 30 as the situation unfolds.

The landslides were triggered by heavy rains that lashed the mountainous district of Bulambuli on Wednesday night. This region is no stranger to landslides, given its geographical makeup. The inclement weather conditions have made rescue efforts challenging, with roads rendered impassable due to mud and continuous rainfall.

The affected area spans approximately 50 acres, encompassing homesteads and farmlands that have been devastated by the natural disaster. In response to the crisis, the prime minister's office issued a disaster alert, highlighting the widespread impact of heavy rains that have also led to the closure of major roads.

Amidst the rescue operations, a distressing incident occurred when two rescue boats capsized during a mission on the River Nile, where the Pakwach bridge had been submerged. The unfolding events underscore the urgent need for coordinated efforts to address the aftermath of the landslides and provide support to the affected communities.
