Heavy rains in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul have resulted in a tragic loss of life, with 37 people confirmed dead and 74 still missing, according to the state civil defense agency. This environmental disaster marks the fourth such occurrence in a year, following devastating floods in July, September, and November 2023 that claimed a total of 75 lives.
The flooding in Rio Grande do Sul has surpassed levels seen during a historic 1941 deluge, as reported by the Brazilian Geological Service. Water levels in some cities have reached their highest points in nearly 150 years of recorded history.
The situation worsened when a dam at a hydroelectric plant between Bento Goncalves and Cotipora partially collapsed, leading to entire cities in the Taquari River valley, such as Lajeado and Estrela, being engulfed by water. In Feliz, a swollen river caused a bridge connecting it to Linha Nova to be swept away.
The impact of the floods has been severe, with widespread disruptions to electricity, communications, and water services reported across the state. More than 23,000 individuals have been forced to evacuate their homes, leaving many stranded and in need of rescue.
The ongoing downpour, which began on Monday, is expected to persist until at least Saturday, according to meteorologists. Governor Eduardo Leite has issued warnings to the state's population, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and the potential for further deterioration, particularly in Porto Alegre.
The extreme weather conditions in South America are attributed to the El Niño climate phenomenon, which has historically caused droughts in the north and intense rainfall in the south.
