A speeding passenger bus tragically fell from a highway into a rocky ravine in southwest Pakistan early Wednesday, resulting in the loss of at least 28 lives and leaving 20 others injured. The incident occurred in Washuk town as the bus was en route from Turbat to Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province.
According to local police, the driver lost control suddenly, leading to the fatal plunge. The driver was among those who lost their lives in the accident. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the crash to determine the sequence of events that led to this devastating outcome.
Government administrator Ismail Mengal confirmed that rescuers and police swiftly responded to the scene, providing immediate medical assistance to the injured passengers. The deceased and injured were promptly transported to a nearby hospital, with some of the injured reported to be in critical condition.
Images from local media outlets depicted the wreckage at the bottom of the rocky ravine, highlighting the severity of the accident. In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and instructed that the injured receive the best available medical care.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also extended their condolences to the victims and their families. This unfortunate incident adds to the string of road accidents that plague Pakistan, where adherence to traffic regulations and safety standards remains a significant concern, particularly in remote and rugged terrains.
Notably, this bus accident follows a recent collision in Multan, where 13 members of a family lost their lives in a collision between a van and a truck. Another incident earlier this month claimed the lives of 20 individuals and left 30 others injured in a similar crash, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures in the country.
