Deadline approaches for Lexington businesses to apply for Green Check

The deadline for Lexington businesses to apply to be Green Check certified is fast approaching. The program evaluates and grades businesses on their environmental sustainability.

The Green Check initiative also works with organizations to help them expand their sustainability efforts. They are then given a score based on categories like transportation practices, energy and water use.

Angela Poe is Senior Program Manager for Lexington Environmental Quality and Public Works. Poe said this is beyond a recycling program.

“Businesses almost always, I can’t think of an exception to this, have points across those various categories. So they’re working on things in all the different categories of environmental sustainability. So, it’s not just, set up a recycle bin and hope that everybody puts the right thing in it,” said Poe.

The program awards participants either a bronze, silver or gold based on a points system. Poe said some businesses go through Green Check multiple times.

“And some of them get pretty competitive with themselves about it. You know, they come in and they get a bronze and they’re like ‘next time, we’re going for gold!’ So, it’s fun to revisit the process with them a few years later and see what they’ve done,” said Poe.

Participants can rent or own their facilities and the certification lasts three years.

The deadline to apply to enter the Green Check Program is January 31st.
