Deadliest Period For Journalists In Gaza Conflict

Al-Hassan Hamad Young Gaza Journalist

Since Israel launched its war in Gaza following the Hamas-led October 7 attacks, more than 150 Palestinian journalists have been killed, as reported by the Committee Protect Journalists (CPJ). The CPJ stated that at least 160 journalists and media workers have lost their lives in Gaza, the Israeli-occupied West Bank, Israel, and Lebanon, making it the deadliest period for reporters since 1992 when the CPJ began collecting data.

One journalist working for the Palestinian Press Agency, Safa, died after sustaining a serious injury from an Israeli airstrike on the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood of Gaza City. This incident was part of a larger pattern of deliberate killings of Palestinian journalists, according to Safa's statement, which called for accountability for those responsible for the attacks.

Another journalist was killed in heavy bombardment in the same neighborhood on the same day. The Israeli military declined to comment on the airstrikes without specific times or locations, citing the ongoing exchanges of fire and the inherent risks of remaining in an active combat zone.

The recent events have underscored the dangers faced by journalists documenting the situation in Gaza. Press freedom groups have called for greater accountability for attacks on reporters in the region, emphasizing the need to protect journalists and uphold their right to report on conflicts without fear of violence.
