A suspect is dead in Killeen, Texas, following a police pursuit that originated in a city 19 miles away and culminated in a shopping mall. The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that several people are believed to be injured in the incident.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Bryan Washko, a trooper shot and killed the suspect after the chase led them into the mall. Washko expressed concern that multiple bystanders may have been shot, although their conditions remain unknown at this time.
The Killeen Police Department acknowledged the situation in a Facebook post on Saturday evening, stating that there was an incident at the Killeen Mall. Killeen Police spokesperson Ofelia Miramontez revealed that the pursuit began in Belton, a city approximately 19 miles east of Killeen, and ended with the vehicle entering the mall.
Miramontez further disclosed that some injuries were reported, but the department could not confirm any casualties. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area to allow first responders to conduct their investigation.
Killeen, located about 150 miles south of Dallas, is known for being home to the Army's Fort Cavazos, previously known as Fort Hood.
