Dead deer dumped on common land linked to suspected poaching

Police are investigating after four dead deer were found dumped on common land. The deer remains were found in north Caerphilly just days after a similarly "macabre scene" was found by a walker in Wentwood Forest.

The four carcasses, found on land between New Tredegar and Hollybush at the weekend, are believed to be the work of poachers. In a post on Gwent Police’s rural crime Twitter account, an officer wrote: “Out investigating today after the remains of four deer were found dumped, suspected to be linked to poaching activity. Quickly located thanks to the caller providing a What 3 Words location. We will follow up on all reports of suspected wildlife crime so if you see it report it.”

A force spokesman for Gwent Police said: “We received a call after four deer were found dead on common land between New Tredegar and Hollybush on Sunday, March 19. Officers from the rural crime team are investigating and enquiries are ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting log reference number 491 19/03/23, or send us a direct message on social media.”

Days earlier, on March 14, a walker in Wentwood Forest came across the distressing scene of a dead deer with its legs severed. Her partner posted a warning on social media and said: “Just a warning to anyone planning on visiting Wentwood Forest of something you might not wish your kids to see. My wife is just back from a walk and saw a very macabre scene on the main forest road heading east from Five Lanes towards Earlswood. It involves a deer carcass, probably recently killed though significantly cleaned by other animals. Sounded fairly normal until she said the legs had been cleanly removed and were visible further down the track. I can’t imagine which regular wild visitor to Wentwood would sever two legs cleanly like that, so our conclusion is some sort of bizarre human activity who perhaps were disturbed.”
