The day temperature is likely to rise slightly above normal at some pockets of the State and Puducherry on Sunday. While dry weather is set to prevail in most parts, the India Meteorological Department has predicted isolated rains over a few places.
The IMD has started issuing special bulletins on the spike in day temperature this month. Officials said there might not be a steep rise in the mercury level and the day temperature may climb up by only one or two degree Celsius above average in some pockets of the State.
Rain likely
A trough at lower level may trigger light to moderate rains in the Nilgiris in Western Ghats. Isolated rains may continue in one or two places till Wednesday. Convective activity, which usually follows a period of intense heat during the day, too may trigger thunderstorms.
On Saturday, a few places like Valparai, Kodaikanal, Thanjavur and Virudhunagar recorded sporadic rains. The mercury level peaked to 39 degree Celsius at Karur Paramathi. Madurai, Erode, Salem and Tiruchi sizzled with maximum temperature climbing to 38 degree Celsius.
Sea breeze in maintaining day temperature close to normal in coastal places like Chennai. While the weather station in Nungambakkam recorded an average temperature of 34.3 degree Celsius, the mercury level rose to 36 degree Celsius at Meenambakkam.
Officials said local conditions and urban heat island effect may contribute to the rise in day temperature in some places like Tiruttani. The department has predicted that the maximum temperature may be around 36 degree Celsius till Monday.
