Dawgs on top: Georgia-Vanderbilt series history

The Georgia Bulldogs and Vanderbilt Commodores have battled on the football field dating back to 1893. Georgia has dominated the series in recent memory, however, Vanderbilt began the series as the top team.

Georgia has won the last four games in the SEC East series. The Bulldogs and Commodores have played 81 total games in their history. Among SEC East foes, the Bulldogs have only played the Florida Gators more.

Kirby Smart and Georgia football enter the 2022 Vanderbilt as heavy favorites over the Commodores. Let’s take a look back at the series history between the two schools:

Overall series: UGA leads by wide margin

Overall, Georgia leads Vanderbilt 59-20-2 in the history of the series. Vandy got off to an impressive 8-1-1 start in the first ten games between the two universities. The Bulldogs are in control of the series now and have lost only six times to the Commodores since 1961.

2021: Georgia earns biggest win in series history

Georgia star tight end Brock Bowers introduced himself to numerous college football fans with his huge performance against Vanderbilt in 2021. Quarterback JT Daniels started for the Bulldogs last season. The Dawgs won 62-0. Vanderbilt will be motivated this year because of last year’s game.

2020: Game cancelled

Vanderbilt cancelled the Georgia game back in 2020 because they could not field a roster. The Commodores fired head coach Derek Mason in 2020. Clark Lea, a former Notre Dame defensive coordinator, took over for Vanderbilt in 2021. The Commodores have already won more games (three) in 2022 than they did in 2020 and 2021 combined.

2016: Vandy's last win in the series

The Vanderbilt Commodores beat first-year head coach Kirby Smart and Georgia 17-16 in 2016. Vanderbilt used a big kick return to start the game to jump ahead with a 7-0 lead.

Jacob Eason and Georgia’s offense dominated Vanderbilt statistically, but Georgia settled for three field goals on the day. Georgia outgained Vandy 421-171. Both teams had no turnovers, but the Dawgs couldn’t break through in the red zone.

Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett will start the first game against Vanderbilt of his career in Week 7. Georgia hosts Vanderbilt for the first time since 2018 due to 2020’s cancelled game. The Bulldogs enter the game with a 6-0 record. Vanderbilt has not won an SEC game since the Commodores beat Missouri in 2019.
