The ongoing contract issues between the New England Patriots and defensive tackle Davon Godchaux still hang over the organization like an immutable cloud of darkness.
Godchaux is in the final year of his contract with no guaranteed money left on the deal. He hasn’t opted to hold in or hold out on the team. Granted, he didn’t participate in Day 2 of training camp, but according to Patriots coach Jerod Mayo, that was not contract-related.
The veteran defensive lineman was back on the field on Friday, despite his contract frustrations.
“It’s frustrating but I’m going to give it to my agent,” Godchaux told media members. “I’m going to let Drew [Rosenhaus] handle it. He’s been doing it for a long time. He’s got my best interest. I’m just going to roll with him. I’m just going to control what I can control. It’s frustrating playing out here with no guaranteed money, but I’m going to put it in Drew’s hands. He’s going to do what’s best for me.”

Godchaux did indicate that he believes a deal will ultimately get done for him to stay in New England, but if that didn’t happen, he also understands the business side of football.
The Patriots will have to decide between outright extending him for more years or sweetening his current contract and coming back to the table after the season.
They just agreed to a three-year extension with safety Jabrill Peppers. There’s plenty of time for them to agree on a deal with Godchaux as well, if they feel that’s the right move.
