Ford's Will Davison has become the first driver to secure multiple Supercars pole positions in 2022 with a commanding qualifying drive at Albert Park.

Davison will start first for the second 20-lap sprint race of the Melbourne 400.

The 39-year-old backed up his pole from the last round in Tasmania to start strongly at the Australian Grand Prix circuit on Thursday.

"It's high grip so you've got to be committed," Davison said.

"I was confident, I didn't want to change the car much, I knew it was really up to me but I'm really bloody happy with that.

"It's really easy to overstep it so it's just knowing where to be super aggressive and where to bring it back a little bit so very easy to make a mistake."

Earlier, David Reynolds became the sixth different pole-sitter this season by securing the fastest-time in qualifying for the weekend's opening race.

The Grove Racing ace proved his first drive was no fluke by finishing second in the next session, meaning he will be on the front of the grid for both races.

The first qualifying session was full of action, with Ford's Jake Kostecki smashing into a fence on turn five to severely damage the back of his Mustang.

The crash caused the session to be red-flagged with more than two minutes left, handing the pole to Reynolds.

Davison and Reynolds will be out to end the dominance of reigning champion Shane Van Gisbergen, who is again taking all before him in 2022.

Van Gisbergen won four out of the first five races to build a 67-point lead over Davison's Shell V-Power teammate Anton De Pasquale.

The first race of the weekend will get underway at 2.20pm (AEST) on Friday, with the next two taking place on Saturday, before one more on Sunday morning ahead of the Formula One Grand Prix.
