David Tennant has claimed he recently discovered he could have played James Bond instead of Daniel Craig.

The actor, 51, said he had been unaware of the opportunity until a director told him producers Barbara Broccoli and her half-brother Michael G Wilson had put him on a list of potential 007s.

Appearing on the Acting for Others podcast, the Scottish star explained: “I worked with a director recently who had worked with the Broccolis who was like, ‘Yeah, you were on the list that time.’

“I was like, ‘What time? What are you talking about?’ He went, ‘Yeah, the last time.’ I suppose it must have been Daniel Craig, before that I would have been a child.

“I think it was quite a long list and I don’t think I was ever near the top of it. But apparently so.”

Ultimately Craig was announced as the latest Bond in time for 2006’s Casino Royale, while Tennant took on another major role, playing the 10th Doctor Who between 2005 and 2010.

Craig confirmed that he was stepping away from the franchise in 2019, with 2021’s No Time to Die his last outing as Bond.

Producers are on the hunt for a new actor to take on the role of the famous spy but said he will have to agree to sign up for 12 years if he accepts.
