David Tennant 'could return as Doctor Who' in upcoming series

Since Jodie Whittaker will be leaving her role as Doctor Who behind, rumours have been circulating that David Tennant may reprise his role as the famous doctor.

Jodie currently plays the 13th regeneration of the Doctor and will bow out from the series in a special episode that will air later this year.

Fans are eager to know who will replace Jodie, but rumours circulating suggest that Scots actor David Tennant could be returning to play the role of the famous time lord, after a fan says they have spotted a tip off on a fan page.

They say that a BBC source "leaked the information", according to the Plymouth Herald.

However, the source of the information has not been confirmed and is not official.

Despite this, fans do think that the rumours have credibility, as the user has also claimed that this source is the same person who leaked the casting of Sacha Dhawan as the Doctor's nemesis, The Master, in series 12.

If the rumours are true, it would make David Tennant the only Doctor Who actor to have played the same incarnation of the time lord twice.

The Des and Good Omens actor played the Doctor from 2005-2010 alongside companions including Billie Piper's Rose Tyler and Catherine Tate's Donna Noble.

His Doctor proved extremely popular with audiences, with over 12.7million people tuning in to see the actor's final episode, which featured the emotional words "I don't want to go," before he regenerated into the 11th Doctor played by The Crown star Matt Smith.

With writer Russell T Davies, who worked with David Tennant on the series, back to front the programme for its 14th run, it would also seem the perfect time for the actor to return.

When asked about a potential return to the series last year, the actor also told Digital Spy: "Never say never."

He said: "Because there's that element of fantasy, anything is ultimately possible. You should never say never to anything. I think that way madness lies."

However, while many might question how the star could return to the role, previous episodes have shown that the Doctor does have the ability to choose his appearance.

Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor was able to choose his next regeneration with a little help from the Sisterhood of Khan, while in classic Tom Baker serial Destiny of the Daleks, his Gallifreyan companion Romana was able to select her new body following a regeneration as well.

Despite the rumours, other stars who have been hotly tipped to join the series as the next Doctor have also included David Tennant's fellow Good Omen's star Michael Sheen, as well as It's a Sin stars Lydia West, Olly Alexander and Omari Douglas.

However, Jodie Whittaker's successor has not been officially confirmed and fans will have to wait just a little longer to find out who will be next to step into the Tardis.
