David Seaman weighs in on Aaron Ramsdale-Nick Pope debate as goalkeepers compete for England spot

David Seaman has admitted he cannot pick between Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Pope in the battle to be England’s No2 goalkeeper.

The debate has escalated following Pope’s errors against Germany on Monday night, in his distribution and for the visitors’ third goal of the 3-3 draw.

Jordan Pickford’s injury absence for the international period saw the Newcastle shot-stopper favoured ahead of Ramsdale against both Italy and Germany.

Former England and Arsenal keeper Seaman believes the pair are “really, really close” and has tipped them to keep Dean Henderson out of the squad.

“When you look at the goalkeepers that are available, Jordan’s really good with his feet, Aaron’s really good with his feet, Dean’s good,” he told Sky Sports News.

“It’s not Nick’s strong point but Nick’s strong point is in different areas - he commands his penalty area really well, he’s probably the best at taking crosses.

“But with Aaron, you get an all-round game. But it’s not about that, it’s about who’s the No1. And Jordan, fingers crossed that he comes back from his injury and he’ll be okay for the World Cup.”
