David Seaman likens Illan Meslier to 'Superman' after heroic display in Newcastle draw

David Seaman has likened Illan Meslier to 'Superman' following his heroic performance in Leeds United's goalless draw against Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Meslier produced five saves to keep just his third clean sheet of the season, as Leeds finished the year with an important point on New Year's Eve.

The 22-year-old had conceded 10 goals in his previous three outings prior to the Whites' trip to Tyneside. He also hadn't kept a clean sheet since October's goalless draw against Aston Villa at Elland Road.

But his saves proved crucial as Leeds successfully frustrated a Newcastle side that had won six matches on the spin prior to kick-off. And although Leeds may have been disappointed that they failed to impose themselves on the game in the final third, Seaman believes their draw against the Magpies was a 'great result'.

“Meslier was like Superman in goal again. He was stopping it with absolutely everything. So that was a great result. That helped with a great Christmas for Arsenal,” the former England, Arsenal and Leeds goalkeeper told Seaman Says.

The France U21 international joined Leeds from FC Lorient on loan in the summer of 2019. He was initially behind Iker Casilla in the pecking order, but replaced the Spaniard as first-choice goalkeeper for the closing stages of the season, as Leeds lifted the Championship title.

Meslier joined on a permanent basis for £5 million in July 2020, and has never relinquished his number one role between the sticks at Elland Road. He has played 89 of the Whites' 92 league games since their Premier League return.
