David Schwimmer weighs in on Friends’ infamous ‘we were on a break’ drama as he shares update on reunion episode

David Schwimmer has thrown his support behind his Friends character in the show’s infamous ‘we were on a break’ debate.

A memorable storyline from the third series of the hit US sitcom, which ran for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004, saw Ross (played by Schwimmer) get together with another woman after having an argument with girlfriend Rachel (Jennifer Aniston).

He then claims that this did not constitute cheating on Rachel as the couple “were on a break” at the time.

Discussing the much-quoted moment while appearing by video link on the Jimmy Fallon Show, Schwimmer said: “Yeah, it is not even a question. They were on a break.”

He added: “People are so passionately divided on whether or not [Ross and Rachel] were ‘on a break.’”

Schwimmer, 53, went on to reveal that filming for the Friends unscripted reunion special is slated for next month after being derailed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The one-off reunion, which is expected to take a chat show format, was originally supposed to be filmed in the spring ahead of the launch of HBO’s streaming platform HBO Max, however lockdown restrictions put production on hold.

The actor said that shooting is supposed to happen in maybe in August, the middle of August.”

He described the planned special as “a really fun interview and then some other surprise bits.”

He added: “We’re going to wait and see another week or two if we all determine it’s really safe enough to do. And if not, we will wait to do it when it’s safe.”

The reunion will mark the first time that Schwimmer has been on screen with co-stars Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt Le Blanc and Matthew Perry since the Friends finale in 2004.
