David Moyes provides injury update on West Ham’s Gianluca Scamacca ahead of Newcastle clash

West Ham United striker Gianluca Scamacca is set to miss the majority of April with a knee injury that kept him out of Sunday’s 1-0 win over Southampton.

The 24-year-old striker returned from last month’s international break with Italy with a knee issue that kept him out of the Hammers ’ win over Saints, with Scamacca now set for at least two more weeks of absence.

The £30.5million arrival from Sassuolo is now set to miss at least the majority of the Hammers’ remaining eight matches this month in all competitions, with Moyes confirming that Scamacca faces at least two weeks of rehabilitation work ahead of Wednesday’s meeting with Newcastle United.

There is a chance in the worst case scenario that Scamacca will be forced to have surgery, but as things stand, Moyes remains hopeful that surgery is not required.

“It’s roughly the same squad,” said Moyes. “The only news that we’ve got is that Gianluca Scamacca’s got two weeks rehabilitation on his knee at the moment, which is going to keep him out for a couple of weeks.

“We’ll need to see how it is going forward, we think it doesn’t need surgery at the moment but we just need to see how the next two weeks go.”

After Wednesday’s meeting with Newcastle, West Ham face Fulham, Gent twice in the Europa Conference League, Arsenal, Bournemouth, Liverpool and Crystal Palace.
