David Moyes praises 'outstanding' Erling Haaland as Man City beat West Ham 2-0

West Ham manager David Moyes has lauded the "outstanding" Erling Haaland after his side were defeated 2-0 by Manchester City on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

Haaland scored a brace to earn his side the three points, converting from the penalty spot in the first half before adding a second following a superb Kevin De Bruyne through-ball.

It was Haaland's second goal that particularly impressed Moyes, although the former Manchester United manager did feel like his side could have dealt with it better.

"Well, I don’t really want to talk about other team’s players but we watched him from a distance and it looks like he’s going to be an outstanding player," Moyes told Sky Sports after the game.

"We saw him make the same run against Liverpool in the Community Shield, we talked about it, him running through and the quality De Bruyne’s got, that he could make the pass, but I think we should’ve cut that out."

Haaland could have arguably scored a hat-trick, but he spurned a couple of chances in the second half before he was replaced by Julian Alvarez.

The win sees City start the new season with a win for the first time since 2020 after they lost at Tottenham on the opening day of last season.

The Blues took full advantage of Liverpool dropping points on Saturday, as Jurgen Klopp's side could only draw 2-2 away at newly-promoted Fulham.
