David Moyes makes honest West Ham admission after humiliating Brighton Premier League defeat

West Ham United manager David Moyes has said that Saturday’s 4-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium was among the worst results of his West Ham tenure.

The Scottish boss saw his Hammers side trounced by the Seagulls, whose manager Roberto De Zerbi was serving a touchline ban for the game.

Goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Joel Veltman, Kaoru Mitoma, and Danny Welbeck saw the Hammers suffer their heaviest defeat of the season in all competitions.

Defeats for Bournemouth and Leeds United however mean that West Ham remain 16th and two points clear of the bottom three for now. Despite that, Moyes has labelled it among the worst performances in his second spell at the club, adding that the trip to Manchester United in the FA Cup less than 72 hours was a big factor.

“Yeah, I think so. Certainly in my second time back it would be one of the worst and one of our worst performances as well,” said Moyes.

“But I could give a bit and say we put a huge effort in, put out our strongest team to try and get through in midweek in the FA Cup. We did everything we could in the first 80 minutes and couldn’t quite see it through at Old Trafford. Did that play a part today? I believe it did.”

On the game itself, Moyes felt the side let themselves down and did not make the most of first half chances for Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek, both of which were saved by Jason Steele when the score was only 1-0.

He added that he hoped for an inspired second half performance from his players after only trailing at the break by a goal, although he got the exact opposite from his side.

“It wasn’t good. We’ve not played well today, we let ourselves down,” added Moyes. “In the first-half I thought we gave away a terrible goal from a penalty-kick which we could’ve easily dealt with.

“We were always coming to play a team that would have a lot of possession so we knew we’d find ourselves having to give up a bit more than we would normally do. We had a couple of really good chances to equalise in the first-half and didn’t take them.

“We went in 1-0 down, it was really disappointing. We hoped we’d come out and play better in the second-half and it was the opposite.”
