David Moyes delivers honest verdict on West Ham's narrow defeat to Manchester United

West Ham United manager David Moyes thought his side deserved to earn at least a point following their 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Marcus Rashford, who was recalled to the starting line-up after starting Thursday night's 3-0 Europa League win over Sheriff Tiraspol on the bench, headed home the only goal of the game shortly before half-time. He powered home Christian Eriksen's cross to score the 100th goal of his United career.

Despite suffering that blow ahead of the half-time interval, it was West Ham who carried the greater threat in the second half, creating a gulf of opportunities to draw level. Centre-back Kurt Zouma and captain Declan Rice both went the closest to bringing the Londoners level, but their efforts were met by an inspired David de Gea between the sticks.

The Spaniard, supported by some heroic defending from Diogo Dalot, did just enough to help United clinch all three points, lifting them to within a point of the top four. But after seeing his side go close to drawing level on more than one occasion, Moyes felt his team deserved something from the contest.

"My record [at Old Trafford] will still be the same but I think if you look through the games they have been really close and today we were as close as we have been," Moyes told Sky Sports. "I thought the players did a great job and we didn't come away with anything when we deserved to come away with something.

"I don't think we could have done an awful lot more. We maybe could have played better for a period in the first half, where I thought we turned the ball over too much and it was around about the period where United got their goal. I thought we gave the ball away too much, but I thought all the team played really well today."

Rashford's goal seven minutes before the interval could have dented the Hammers' confidence and hopes of getting back into the contest. However, they performed well in the second half, so much so that Moyes felt they looked the more likely to get the next goal.

The Scot added: "It was very good. We kept pushing, we kept trying to score and we always knew that United are going to be a threat as well, meaning they gave us some moments as well. But in the second half, especially, I thought we looked the side more likely to score a goal."
