David McGoldrick says he does not view Notts County move as a 'retirement home'

David McGoldrick does not view Notts County as a 'retirement home' and revealed his determination to help his boyhood club push further up the Football League. The 35-year-old turned down a new deal at Derby County and approaches from Championship clubs to sign with the Magpies on a two-year deal, fresh off a 25-goal campaign in League One.

His decision came as a surprise to many, but the things that motivate players early in their careers do not control McGoldrick anymore, who had always envisioned a return to Meadow Lane after leaving as a teenager 18 years ago.

McGoldrick has played in the Premier League and on the international stage, but now, he wants to give back to the club that gave him his start in professional football. He said: "I've got to the age where money isn't everything.

"Happiness is a massive part of family and it's something I'm trying to teach my kids. How can I teach that to my kids and not practise it myself?

"I didn't want to look back in 10 years’ time and say I had a chance to play for Notts County but I turned it down for a few more bob somewhere else. It's a great move for me, for my football career. Take away all the other stuff that comes with it and it's where I want to be playing in terms of my future."

There is a lot of sentimentality and romanticism that surrounds a move like this, but McGoldrick assures fans that he is not here for an easy ride off into the sunset. He has come for more success and to play a big role in achieving that with Notts.

"I played Premier League, Championship and League One and scored goals in every one of them, so I feel like I bring a lot of experience to the team," he added.

"I always had it at the back of my mind that I want to finish here, I haven't come here as a retirement home. I've come here to play and play as many games as I can. The dream is to play for the next couple of years, be part of the team, be successful and you never know, maybe take the club to another division.

"I also want to go into coaching in the future so learning from Luke Williams I can gain many things. Hopefully, I can coach at some point at this football club."
