David Marshall 'doesn't make same mistake twice' as Hibs No1 backed by Lee Johnson to silence critics

David Marshall has been backed by Lee Johnson who admits 'he doesn't make the same mistake twice'.

The Hibs No1 came under fire after an error that allowed James Tavernier to net Rangers' opener from a wide free-kick at Easter Road. Michael Beale's men went on to win the match 3-1 with the capital club falling four points behind city rivals Hearts in fourth after their victory over Aberdeen at Tynecastle. St Mirren are just two points behind in sixth in the race for Europe with fifth offering a route into the Europa Conference League qualifying if Celtic lift the Scottish Cup in early June.

Former Scotland keeper Marshall was disappointed with the goal but his boss is certain he will block that out when the Scottish champions come calling later tonight. The veteran has been praised for his displays over the course of the season and will be looking to make up for that error with a strong display under the lights in Leith.

Johnson said: “I think that for goalkeepers it is a lonely world, isn’t it? A midfielder can make 100 mistakes and no one mentions it but a goalkeeper makes one mistake and it costs you a goal.

“Over the course of the season he has been really, calm, really secure, and composed and he is an experienced goalkeeper.

“Listen, he was disappointed on Sunday as we all were with that goal but at the same time, I’m absolutely certain that David Marshall goes into Wednesday with a pure mind and if he faces that situation again, he doesn’t make the same mistake twice. That is the quality of someone of his ilk, with the experience he’s got.”

He added: “At the end of the game I did have elements of frustration boiling in me, but I think it was important to celebrate the positives with the boys.

“It’s not a time in the season where you’re going to come out and show your anger in a team talk. It has to be about the next moment and next game.”
