David Livingstone Birthplace Museum to host first 'Youth Open 'Day

The David Livingstone Birthplace in Blantyre will host its first ‘Beats and Blocks’ Youth Open Day this month.

Taking place on Friday, July 22 the event will welcome young adults between the age of 12 to 25 to the museum.

The day will be dedicated to celebrating the museums vibrant young adult audience.

Young adults will be welcomed to the site to discover the museum’s permanent exhibition, meet the staff members, and connect with peers and local community organisations.

The day will also feature a block printing art workshop, table tennis, food and refreshments, a DJ set from Jambo! Radio and a short presentation from members of the museum’s learning and engagement team.

Grant Mackenzie, director at the attraction, told Lanarkshire Live : “We are very excited to welcome young adults to the museum for our first Youth Open Day.

"This will be a great opportunity to celebrate our young adult audience and for them to have the chance to meet the team running the museum.

“We are also very excited to open our applications for the new youth committee which will be a fantastic way for young people to have a say about the museum.

"We really want to engage our younger audience as much as possible at David Livingstone Birthplace since they are such an important part of our community.”

The David Livingstone Birthplace Museum, located on the site of the former Blantyre Cotton Works, where David Livingstone was born and raised, recently underwent a transformative refurbishment and reinterpretation project.
